Counselor Corner January 2024
Greetings Scott Families!!!
My name is Ben Hildner; students know me as Mr. H. I’m the guy who greets kids with music and fist bumps from our mascot, Scotty, at the back door in the mornings. I wanted to reach out and share a couple of things that I thought might be helpful to you. Today, it’s mental health access and our theme of the month, perseverance!
First off, if you have even considered seeking help for your child or your family, that’s wonderful. The biggest obstacle to getting support is believing you don’t need it, or that help is only for people who have bigger problems. We all benefit from help sometimes, and it rarely hurts to look. That being said, it can be hard to find the right support even after you start looking. If you have OHP insurance, you might start by calling Morrison Center (1507 NE 122nd Ave), intake (503) 258-4381. Other insurance providers have specific behavioral health lines. Kaiser is (503) 249-3434. Moda is (503)624-9382; you can also ask your primary care doctor for a referral - some clinics have mental health providers on-site. If none of these seem to be working, any PPS student can get free healthcare access at the Student Health Center at McDaniel High School (2735 NE 82nd Ave) or call for an appointment at (503) 988-3382. Portland has a unique walk-in urgent mental healthcare clinic at 4212 SE Division (503) 963-2575 for same-day support. It’s like ZoomCare for Mental Health! Multnomah County has a crisis line for ANY level of consult: (503) 988-4888. Finally, if you’re feeling hopeless and considering suicide, know that there is an easy-to-remember 24-hour national hotline for support: 988. Feel free to reach out to Scott’s Student Support Providers - Ben Hildner, School Counselor (503) 347-4976 or Rosi Sanchez (971) 501-8962 with additional questions.
*pro tip* it helps to call multiple resources, repeatedly, leave voicemail, and ask about cancellations

Theme of the month: PERSEVERANCE
I find it helpful to look BEYOND the classic “keep trying” when talking with kids about what perseverance means because when we are frustrated, the attempts might not be very well thought out. Instead, at Scott, I like to describe it as “trying things in new ways, even when I make mistakes”. You can help your child develop perseverance by talking about ways we deal with the disappointment or frustration of not getting something at first, but then adjusting our approach, sometimes in many different ways, to get a little better.
