AINSWORTH CAREER FAIR SUCCESS!!!
By multiple measures, the 2014 Career Fair at Ainsworth was a success. 37 presenters came representing 28 different careers including a contractor, a personal trainer, fire-fighters, nurses, doctors, lawyers, and an international sustainable development consultant. Noteworthy was Portland Police officer John Romero, of recent Wilson High School fame, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Nigel Jacquiss, and Ainsworth friend and Pink Martini percussionist Brian Davis. Each presenter brought a flair totally unique and engaging for all of our K-5 students.
In the morning, staff and students managed successfully to completely “shuffle” 1st – 5th grade students regardless of homeroom, in a “jigsaw” activity. The benefit of this was that students from one homeroom came back after seeing three presentations that most of their classmates did not see, making them “experts,” and fueling conversations that lasted well through lunch, recess, and, hopefully long into the future.
One objective of having a career fair is to learn about oneself. I’m hoping that students begin early to ask themselves how they are different and how that might influence their focus in school and in their future job. Part of this is realizing there are jobs that are NOT a good fit. I hope that, as students ponder their future careers, they see the difference between disliking a job and fearing a job would be too hard. It is never too late (especially not in Elementary School) to develop a new skill. The keys are practice, persistence, and a positive attitude.
Enjoy the photos! Look for announcements about Peninsula & Ainsworth's career fairs for 2015 on April 28 & 29, respectively.
